Bison Tales June 2, 2023

Good afternoon Bison families,

June? When did that happen? We have had an incredible year so far and it has flown by. The students, staff and greater community of Ardrossan are truly incredible.

Thank you so much to our Ardrossan Elementary Parent Support Association for treating all of us to delicious snacks and lunch today. We are so lucky to have your support, it takes a village!

It is with mixed emotions that both Tandy and myself announce that we have been appointed to new positions for the 2023 - 2024 school year. I will be heading to FR Haythorne Junior High in Sherwood Park as the principal, and Tandy has been appointed principal of École Parc Élémentaire in Fort Saskatchewan. Even though we have both been here a short time, it is a difficult place to leave. This community has welcomed us with open arms, and we will miss you.

We are excited to announce that Daniel Verhoeff will be joining the herd as the new principal. Here is a message from Mr. Verhoeff for us:

Hello everyone, I wanted to take a few minutes to introduce myself.  As a former Ardrossan student, I am thrilled at the opportunity to return to the community.  Through the course of my career I have also taught Outdoor Education in the high school next door.  In the past five years I have worked at École Parc Élémentaire, and prior to that I served as an Assistant Principal at Salisbury Composite High School, and before that I was Principal and Assistant Principal of Andrew School.  I am originally trained as a Jr/Sr High teacher, but have fallen in love with the little kiddos during my time in elementary. I have heard nothing but wonderful things about the school, student, staff, and parents.  I am really looking forward to getting to know your kids and our school family this upcoming fall.  I hope that everyone has an amazing last month of school, and an even better summer to follow!

Have a great weekend,

Lana Lastiwka and Tandy Atchison

Principal and Assistant Principal

Parents Make the Difference

Each month we will include some articles with some great tips and strategies for parents. Here is this week's featured article:

Support your child as the end of the school year approaches

By May, some students act like summer vacation has already started. They “forget” to do turn in schoolwork. They stop giving their best effort and start avoiding anything that seems difficult or challenging.

But the school year isn’t over yet. Students need to stay focused on learning until the last day of school. Here’s how to help your child:

  • Review past schoolwork papers, quizzes and tests. Use them to talk about how much your child has learned this year. Having these papers close at hand will also be useful when studying for end-of-year tests.
  • Shape year-end learning around your child’s interests. If there is one more book project due, suggest choosing a book on a favorite topic. If there is a social studies report, suggest focusing it on something your child is interested in learning more about.
  • Help your child manage big end-of-year projects. Long-range assignments can be overwhelming. So, in addition to helping your child break the assignment down into smaller steps, encourage this rule of thumb: Move the deadline for finishing the project earlier by two days. If a report is due on Wednesday, your child should plan to get it finished by Monday. That way, your child will have a cushion if something comes up.
