Bison Tales February 24, 2023

Happy Friday Ardrossan families,

Next week we kick off our Carnaval and Les Rendez-vous de la francophonie events. Our staff and our Canadian Parents for French association has been working hard to plan many great events for our school community. We'd like to thank everyone for all their hard work in planning amazing activities and presentations for us.  We appreciate it so much!

Thank you so much to our school community for supporting our Jump Rope for Heart initiative.  We have already raised $2800.00 for The Heart and Stroke Foundation!  We are so proud of the support we've received.

Have a great weekend everyone,

Lana Lastiwka and Tandy Atchison

Principal and Assistant Principal

PARENT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED - March 2, 2023

Thursday, March 2 is Carnaval at Ardrossan Elementary.  This is a great event that requires a lot of parent support.  If you are available to help out, please use this Sign-Up Genius to volunteer your time. We cannot thank our Canadian Parents for French enough for their time and dedication to bring this amazing event to our school.

What is Carnaval and Les Rendez-Vous de la Francophonie?

During the month of March, Ardrossan Elementary will celebrate Les Rendez-vous de la Francophonie and Carnaval.  This will be an action-packed month filled with French language and cultural fun for our school community.

To kick off our month we will welcome Bonhomme back for our Carnaval event on March 2. Carnaval is a fun-filled event organized by the Canadian Parents for French (CPF) Ardrossan Chapter. Carnaval is a celebration of fabulous French-Canadian activities including la tire (maple syrup on a stick), crepes, hot chocolate around a fire pit, music, a variety of games, and a sleigh ride.

Les Rendez-vous will give us the chance to rejoice in living in a bilingual country and in learning more about Franco-albertan roots in our neighbourhood. La Girandole will bring a French-Canadian dance workshop to our K to 6 classes on March 6.

On March 10 singer, magician, and comedian Isabelle Cliché will perform for our school. Throughout the remainder of the month our students will continue to expand their knowledge and appreciation for the French-Canadian culture.

Bison Bravo a Staff Member

Did you know that the Ardrossan Elementary Parent Support Association has started a staff bravo initiative?  As you might know, Ardrossan staff regularly give out Bison Bravos to students to acknowledge acts of citizenship, kindness or excellence.

AEPSA is offering the chance for students and families to Bravo a staff member!  All you have to do is click on the the Bravo a Staff Member box on the right side of the school webpage to fill out an electronic Bravo form.  Then our amazing AEPSA parents write you message on a note which is delivered to that staff member along with a sweet treat!

Ardrossan Elementary's Running Club's Debut!

On Thursday, February 23rd, 4 teams of runners, representing Ardrossan, in grades 4,5, and 6, competed in the Running Room Indoor Games at the Butterdome on the University of Alberta campus. We are so proud of how well they did running against teams from other schools! 2 of the teams will be moving on to compete again on March 11th.  We will continue to strengthen and develop our runners as there was much commitment and dedication shown.

Grade 6 Computer Club

Ardrossan will be starting a computer club for grade 6 students! The club is looking for donations of computer towers (working or not). The students will be taking these computers apart and learning about their components. If you have a computer tower to donate, please contact the office, at 780-922-2066, before sending anything in.

Thank you in advance from your Gr. 6 Computer Club members!

Measuring Success: Grade 4 Parents Complete this Year’s Alberta Education Assurance Survey

Deadline extended to March 17, 2023.

Once again, Alberta Education is surveying teachers, students and families through its annual Alberta Education Assurance (AEA) Survey. The survey acts as an annual check-up on the province’s education system. Every year, Alberta Education conducts the survey to gather information about the quality of education provided by Alberta schools and school authorities. The survey looks at various measures such as education quality, citizenship, family involvement, engagement levels, school climate and student wellness.

The AEA survey is sent to

· Small schools (fewer than 120 students in grades 4-12)—based on jurisdiction requests for more reportable survey data at the school level, the survey is expanded to include all students in grades 4 and above and their parents and guardians.

· Large schools (120 or more students in grades 4-12)—only students in grades 4, 7 and 10 and their parents and guardians are included in the survey. These grades are considered to be a reasonably representative sample of students.

Throughout February, Grade four students at Ardrossan Elementary are completing the survey online at the school. Student participation is voluntary and completely anonymous. Students are assigned a random username and password to ensure survey responses aren’t linked to any individual student. The survey doesn’t take long to complete and is done within the school day during regular class time.

Additionally, parents and guardians of students in these grades are also asked to take a survey, either online or by mail. Alberta Education will send families information about the survey directly. As with the student and teacher survey, it’s anonymous and asks questions about your school experiences. If you have a child in these grades, we encourage you to participate. The survey deadline is March 17, 2023.

Results from the AEA Survey are provided to Elk Island Public Schools each spring. The Division then uses the data to inform its four-year education plan, school education plans and strategies for continuous improvement. Each fall, the results are also shared with EIPS families and school communities in the Division’s Annual Education Results Report.

Kindergarten Registration is Now Open!

Is your child turning five on or before Dec. 31, 2023? If so, it’s now time to register for kindergarten. To register, simply complete the online registration form at eips.ca/kindergarten.

To help families prepare, Elk Island Public Schools has put together an online EIPS Kindergarten Tool kit to make the transition as smooth as possible. The kit includes information on registration, important dates, programming options, what to expect, eligibility, how to find your designated school, transportation and more.

Complete your Returning Student Registration: February 1-28

Elk Island Public Schools’ (EIPS) returning student registration process is now open. All current students, except Grade 12, must complete the online Returning Student Registration Form to confirm their enrolment in a school for the upcoming 2023-24 school year. Additionally, students who want to attend a non-designated school need to make that request through the returning student registration process—acceptance is based on available space. All current EIPS students are required to complete the form by Feb. 28, 2023.

To access the Returning Student Registration Form, simply log in to the PowerSchool Parent Portal.

If you don’t have a PowerSchool Parent Portal account, you do need to set one up. For help see: Create a PowerSchool Parent Portal account

For more information contact the school directly.
