Bison Tales January 27, 2023

Such a great jersey day!

Happy Friday Bison Families,

Another beautiful week weather wise we have had, and so lucky as we know how cold January can be. This said, it does look like we have colder weather approaching next week. Thank you for ensuring your children are prepared for the weather. We will continue to have outdoor recess unless the temperature, including wind-chill, is -21 degrees or colder.

Time seems to always fly by, as we can say farewell to January and welcome February. The days are getting longer which makes us happy! We are looking forward to seeing our families during parent teacher interviews on February 6 and 7.

A sincere thank you to all of you for reading the Bison Tales, as you know we always have lots going on!

Have a wonderful weekend everyone.

School Messenger App

Ardrossan elementary school and the Division use the SchoolMessenger platform to communicate with families—through both phone and email. Be sure to add communications@eips.ca and general.AEL@eips.ca to your safe sender list to avoid having important messages funneled into your junk mail folder.

The easiest way to stay connected is to download the SchoolMessenger app. Get the latest updates from both the Division and your child’s school direct to your mobile device and enable push notifications to never miss a message. Families can also check back on past messages—for up to 30 days—directly in the app rather than searching to find an old message buried in their inbox. Download the SchoolMessenger app from the App Store or Google Play today.

Fee Survey

It is that time of year where we start planning for school fees for the 2023 - 2024 school year. Please take a moment to respond to our Fee Survey. We will be looking at the results and feedback to help inform our decision making process.

Returning Student Registration for 2023-24

Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS) will once again conduct an online returning student registration process to confirm student registrations for the 2023-24 school year. Families of all current students—with the exception of graduating Grade 12 students—must complete the process to confirm the school their child plans to attend in the 2023-24 school year or advise the Division of their plans not to return to EIPS. Additionally, students who want to attend a non-designated school need to make that request through the returning student registration process—acceptance is based on available space. The 2023-24 returning student registration takes place Feb. 1-28, 2023.

Access to the Returning Student Registration Form is provided through the PowerSchool Parent Portal. If you don’t have a PowerSchool Parent Portal account, you need to set one up before Feb. 1, 2023.

Kindergarten Registration Starts Soon!

Is your child turning five on or before Dec. 31, 2023? If so, it’s almost time to register for kindergarten.

Kindergarten registration opens for the 2023-24 school year on Feb. 1, 2023.

To help families prepare, Elk Island Public Schools has put together an online EIPS Kindergarten Tool kit to make the transition as smooth as possible. The kit includes information on registration, important dates, programming options, what to expect, eligibility, how to find your designated school, transportation and more.

Additional information regarding Ardrossan Elementary's kindergarten program is available at Ardrossan Elementary Kindergarten Registration Information.

Parents Make the Difference

Each month we will include some articles with some great tips and strategies for parents. Here is this week's featured article:

Four ways to strengthen your child’s character

Values help students make good choices, develop self-esteem, and become responsible individuals. Teaching values at home supports what schools are doing to create a positive school culture that helps all students learn.

Here are four strategies to build your child’s character:

  1. Think about the values that are important to you and your family. Talk about them openly with your child.
  2. Teach by example. Your example is the most powerful teacher of all. Ask yourself, “If my child watched my behavior all day, what lessons would it teach?”
  3. Set high standards. Expect your child to act responsibly, to be kind to others and to tell the truth. Some families make it a point of family pride. “In the Smith family, we tell the truth.”
  4. Talk about the Golden Rule. Teaching kids to treat others the way they would like to be treated helps them make better choices. Ask your child, “Would you want someone to talk to you that way?”
